The rally was held in front of the Grand Mosque in the African country’s capital of Nouakchott, al-akhabr.info website reported.

The demonstrators chanted slogans in condemnation of the remarks and called on the government of Mauritania to expel India’s envoy to the country.

They demanded that Nouakchott sever all diplomatic and economic ties with New Delhi until Indian officials apologize for the desecration of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

The demonstrators also lauded India’s Muslim minority for remaining steadfast in the face of all discriminations and repressions.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa.

The country’s population is estimated to be about 4 million and virtually all Mauritanians are Muslims.

The insulting remarks by two BJP spokespersons namely Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal have been vehemently condemned by Muslim countries.

Many countries, including Iran, Qatar and Kuwait summoned Indian envoys to voice their strong protest.

Facing the backlash, the BJP took action on Sunday and suspended the two officials from the party's primary membership till further notice.

In a statement, the BJP claimed that it “strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion,” without directly pointing to the recent incident.
